About the Speaker: Rupa Viswanath is a Professor of Indian Religions at the Centre for Modern Indian Studies at the University of Göttingen, and a Fellow of Lucy Cavendish College at the University of Cambridge. Prior to arriving in Göttingen, she taught in the South Asia Studies Department at the University of Pennsylvania.

Her research examines slavery and bondage in South Asia, the politics of caste and class, histories of the governance of social difference, and comparative racialization. Her current work studies the governance of dominated castes and the state management of violence in postcolonial south India. Along with many articles, book chapters and op-eds, she is the author of The Pariah Problem: Caste, Religion and the Social in Modern India (2014).
